Chernobyl 2000 was started in 1998 by Mike and Maureen Worton and they have organised 16 convoys so far with over 300 tonnes of aid to Belarus, amongst various other projects. In 2005 Mike was recognised by the Queen for his devotion and tireless work for the charity and received an M.B.E.
Mike still thinks it is strange that an ‘ordinary person’ like him should receive such an honour. For the people of Belarus he has helped over the years, it is not strange at all as he is anything but an ‘ordinary person’ to them.
